Ebola este o boală extrem de gravă, provocată de un virus din familia Filoviridae. Virusurile din această familie sunt cunoscute şi ca agenţi etiologici ai febrelor hemoragice. Familia Filoviridae are 3 genuri: genul Ebolavirus este unul dintre cei 3 membri ai familiei Filoviridae (filovirus), genul Marburgvirus şi genul Cuevavirus.

Genul Ebolavirus cuprinde 5 specii distincte:

• Bundibugyo Ebolavirus (BDBV);
• Zair Ebolavirus (EBOV);
• Reston Ebolavirus (RESTV);
• Sudan Ebolavirus (SUDV);
• Ebolavirus Tai Forest (TAFV).
